Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among thousands of British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out militants who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
